Biomethane team spirit – transition makers in action

In September 2023, ENGIE entered the UK anaerobic digestion market by acquiring Ixora Energy Ltd, a leading biomethane producer. The picture shows the ENGIE team including the new colleagues from IXORA in front of one of four plants owned by the Group in the UK. It was taken just after the acquisition and thus at the start of a cooperation that has since proven very successful, and is aimed at further developing the business in the country.

The photo was taken at the Biodiversity Oasis in Zinasco (Pavia), located at the site of Edison’s biomethane production plant. The oasis was created to regenerate biodiversity by protecting bees and pollinators through cutting-edge technological solutions and by planting various nectar-producing plants. The Zinasco plant is designed to process around 21,000 tons of waste per year and produce approximately 350 standard cubic metres of biomethane per hour.

Lemon-fresh energy: purifying biogas for a greener future

Amidst vibrant citrus trees, four DESOTEC filters quietly purify biogas, blending cutting-edge technology with the beauty of nature. Two filters target volatile organic compounds (VOCs) while the other two focus on eliminating hydrogen sulphide (H2S). These filters are vital in transforming raw biogas into clean, sustainable energy. This scene embodies DESOTEC’s mission to create a cleaner, greener world for all, where the fresh scent of lemons and advanced filtration technology work together in harmony to protect our planet and future generations.

The symbiosis of the future

The reflection in the water perfectly captures the balance between advanced biogas technology and the surrounding natural landscape. This symbiosis impressively demonstrates how biogas can serve as the energy of the future, seamlessly merging technological innovation with ecological responsibility. Biogas is produced through the conversion of organic materials and is refined into biomethane, a renewable and clean gas. This process preserves nature while sustainably harnessing its resources. Together, biogas and biomethane embody a forward-looking solution that fosters harmony between nature and technology, ensuring an environmentally-friendly energy supply for future generations.

Energy to move tomorrow

This photo was taken shortly after the VTTI Bio-Energy Tilburg team injected the first green gas into the local gas grid! The facility processes organic waste like manure and food industry leftovers in these large green tanks, producing about 23 million m³ of biogas annually. In the background, you can see a windmill, which helps to power the facility. With green gas and wind power, this photo shows us the energy of tomorrow!

Growing up

A project for the climate and energy strategy: Europe is preparing to produce 35-45 bcm of biomethane by 2030, rising to 167 bcm by 2050. Biogas and biomethane players are thrilled to fuel Europe with renewable energy but it will require knowledge and innovative skills. The targets are challenging, results are crucial, but people are essential. It is truly incredible to find out how much the great efforts and passion we put into each project, to bring them to life and to ensure they grow, are worth. Like the time someone in a remote village in the South of Italy had the inventive idea of transforming the ancient farm into an innovative agro-ecosystem, where today 120 people from four different continents work together to produce food and to make use of the by-products from the local region through biogas and biomethane generation, improving environmental sustainability and mitigating farming emissions. Why not? The inspiration to believe in herself and in her greener future!

Refuelling agriculture with biomethane

Biomethane offers a potent energy solution for agricultural enterprises, surpassing biogas in its energy yield. Inagro's research explores innovative methods to convert organic waste into biogas and further refine it into biomethane. As part of the Biogas-MAMBO (SBO) and Value4Farm (Horizon Europe) projects, researchers conducted a thorough techno-economic analysis to assess the feasibility of three biogas upgrading technologies that will be installed at Inagro’s biogas plant. In addition, Inagro plans to establish its own refuelling station, where this biomethane will power a biomethane tractor. This approach not only achieves energy self-sufficiency but also enhances mobility independence within the agricultural sector.

Meet the methanogens

Meet the methanogens When you place a small drop of organic waste and residue under a microscope, you get a glimpse of some of our little helpers in the green transition. The methanogens. Just how much help they can offer depends on understanding how they behave and react, and their preferences. This knowledge tells us how to create the best environment in the digester tank to get the most value from the waste. There are so many molecules just waiting to be captured. We are still just scraping the surface of designer manure and how to take care of limited resources like phosphorus. It is not manure – it’s biochemistry at its finest. That’s why biomethane is so much more than just CH4.

Farmers are guardians of our food system

Hundreds of farmers took to the streets of the capital of Europe with their tractors and a clear message: their farms and our food security are at stake. Agriculture is one of the sectors most severely affected by our heavy dependence on external gas supplies and imported fertilisers, which has significantly raised their production costs. Biogases play a pivotal role in fostering the agroecological transition. In rural areas, where agriculture is a primary economic activity, biogas production not only provides a sustainable energy alternative, but also addresses environmental challenges, such as converting organic waste into a valuable resource or enabling the use of digestate as an organic fertiliser made in Europe, just to name a few.
