Milenko Matosic Suarez
Milenko Matosic holds a degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education and a Master’s degree in Renewable Energy Management from the University of Freiburg. His interest in the energy industry rose while working as an engineer in the steel industry, where large quantities of electricity and gas are used in the production process. He worked as advisor at the Ministry of Energy and Energy Regulatory Commission in Mexico, where he was responsible for the compliance of the power transmission projects and also designed the electronic registry for clean energy certificates. His interest in energy projects at the international level led him to work at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) within the technical cooperation program, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where he analyzed the effects of climate change on the operation of nuclear power plants. Milenko continued expanding his knowledge in the energy sector by working at the German Energy Agency (dena) where he was active in European projects related to biomethane production and certificates, while also participating in the revision process of the CEN Standard EN16325 for guarantees of origin in Europe. In his current appointment at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Milenko works together with his team in developing renewable energy scenarios for regions and countries, like the recently published Regional Energy Transition Outlook for the European Union (June 2025). In his free time, Milenko likes spending time with his 1-year old daughter, swimming in lakes and dreaming about the day he’ll own a house on the Adriatic coast and on the Sea of Cortés.
