Mats Eklund
Mats Eklund is Professor in Environmental Technology and Management and Director of the Swedish Biogas Solutions Research Center (BSRC) at Linköping University. The BSRC is a national center of excellence that strengthens society’s ability to realize the sustainability potential of biogas solutions by generating new, societally relevant knowledge in close collaboration with industry, academia, and public stakeholders. Today, the center brings together around fifty organizations and ten research groups from two universities.
Through his leadership, Mats has fostered cross-sector cooperation and broadened knowledge about the multifunctionality of biogas solutions and their benefits across multiple sectors. He introduced the concept of the “Nordic biogas model” to better communicate the holistic value of biogas, highlighting its three interconnected functions: renewable transport fuel production, waste management service, and biofertilizer production. This model also emphasizes wider societal benefits, from reduced greenhouse gas emissions to productivity gains for industry.
In line with his commitment to spreading knowledge, Mats was the driving force behind the publication of Biogas in the Sustainable Society – the Nordic Way, available in both Swedish and English and distributed internationally. His work continues to shape the development of biogas solutions and their contribution to a sustainable society.
