Smart Gas Grid Solutions for Biomethane Integration
As Europe accelerates its transition to renewable energy, biomethane injection into the natural gas grid is growing rapidly, bringing new challenges in balancing multiple injection points and variable production with fluctuating demand. Our initiative introduces Emerson’s Remote Automated Flow (RAF) system, a cutting-edge digitalization and automation solution designed to modernize Pressure Reduction and Metering Stations (PRMS) for smarter gas grid management.
RAF enables real-time remote control and modulation of gas pressure and flow, allowing gas grid operators to dynamically prioritize biomethane injection over fossil natural gas. By continuously adapting to the variable biomethane supply and shifting demand profiles, RAF optimizes the use of renewable gases while ensuring operational safety and grid stability.
Importantly, RAF integrates with existing pilot-operated pressure regulators, requiring minimal infrastructure modifications and avoiding costly station rebuilds.
This digital transformation converts conventional PRMS into intelligent nodes capable of managing multiple injection sources simultaneously, remotely, and efficiently. It supports growing biomethane volumes by enhancing grid flexibility, resilience, and environmental sustainability.
Our proven real-world implementation in the Bordeaux region—where multiple biomethane plants are managed remotely—demonstrates RAF’s effectiveness in optimizing renewable gas integration and facilitating Europe’s decarbonization targets. By embracing digitalization, this initiative provides a scalable, cost-effective pathway to future-proof gas infrastructure and support the energy transition toward a low-carbon future.
