Biogases: Leading Globally, Acting Locally

Fast-Tracking a Clean, Circular, and Competitive Europe

As the EU advances its goals under the Clean Industrial Deal and prepares for the 2040 climate target, renewable gases such as biogas and biomethane are becoming increasingly vital to building a more circular, resilient, and competitive Europe — a vision strongly echoed in this year’s theme for the European Biogas Congress 2025: “Biogases: Leading Globally, Acting Locally – Fast-Tracking a Clean, Circular, and Competitive Europe,” This year’s theme affirms Europe's global leadership in renewable gas innovation while highlighting the local impact that biogases technologies have in communities, regions, and industries across the continent. By investing in local resources, promoting circularity, and creating value chains within the EU, biogases drive both environmental sustainability and economic competitiveness. Sustainable energy has emerged not only as a climate imperative, but also as a strategic pillar for economic stability and resilience. Biogases, fully produced in Europe, are uniquely positioned to support this transition. They represent a tangible, homegrown solution capable to decarbonise our economy and disentangle from external dependencies.

In this article, we take you through the key highlights and sessions of the European Biogas Congress 2025 as flagship event of the European Biomethane Week. From high-level policy discussions and cutting-edge technological showcases to practical case studies and networking opportunities, the agenda is designed to reflect the dynamic evolution of the biogases sector. Whether you're a policymaker, industry leader, researcher, or advocate, the programme offers valuable insights and opportunities to engage with the pressing challenges and innovative solutions shaping Europe’s clean, circular, and competitive energy future.

European Biomethane Week 2024

  1. Competitiveness and industrial leadership

Kicking off the event with the session “Unlocking EU Competitiveness Through Sustainable Energy”, addressing a key pillar of the conference theme: how biogases can support the EU’s industrial strategy. Rather than building costly new infrastructure, biogases technologies leverage and enhance what already exists—making them a cost-efficient way to reduce emissions and stimulate growth.

This discussion continues in the session “Turbocharging the Future: accelerating growth in the biogases sector”, which explores on overcoming market barriers, expanding grid access, and enabling cross-border trade through harmonised certification and clear regulatory frameworks.

  1. Energy resilience and security

The role of biogases in ensuring Europe’s energy future is tackled in the session “Europe’s Energy Security at Centre Stage”. The discussion will focus on how biogases complement with other defossilised energy sources, allowing a more balanced, stable and resilient energy mix.

Breakfast Session on Wednesday will explore the role of biomethane in transport, showcasing its potential as a ready-to-deploy solution for defossilising road mobility.

  1. Circular economy and resource efficiency

The session “Unleashing the EU’s Existing Resources” will discuss how Europe can lead the path towards the global circular economy, focusing on its   capacity to turn waste streams into valuable sources   thereby reducing dependence on external resources and supporting local resilience. The circular economy perspective will be further expended in session “Europe at the Forefront of CO₂ Capitalisation”, from a technical angle, diving into the growing market for biogenic CO₂, its industrial applications, and the need for infrastructure to capture and distribute this valuable resource.

  1. Sustainability and Climate Accountability

As sustainability reporting grows more stringent and transparent, the session “Sustainability first! A checklist for sustainable production” will highlight tools and policies that can ensure biomethane production lives up to its climate credentials.

  1. Social and Community Impact

A critical, and often overlooked, aspect of the biogases narrative is its social acceptance. The session “How Are Biogases Empowering Communities?” will explore the societal benefits of biogases projects, including rural job creation, local economic development, and energy access—all crucial for garnering public acceptance and long-term impact.

The European Biogas Conference is a catalyst for real change.

Whether you're an industry veteran, an emerging innovator, a policymaker, or a stakeholder from a related sector, this is the place to forge partnerships, stay informed, and help shape the future of sustainable energy in Europe.

With nine core sessions, 3 networking events, Inspiration Challenge, EBA’s Awards, over 40 speakers, and the support of 700+ attendees, the conference reflects the collective momentum driving the biomethane sector forward.

In addition to the conference sessions, attendees can engage with exhibitors in the Sustainability Village, where companies and organisations will showcase technologies and solutions aligned with the circular, clean, and competitive future we are building together.
